Based on the landmark 1986 production, Mee and Clarke explore the unconscious world of Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century. Through a series of startling texts—some of which are culled from the psychoanalytic writings of Sigmund Freud—and inspired choreography, this collaboration depicts a Vienna waltzing into the nightmare of a world war. This seductive dreamscape earned strong critical praise and sold-out houses. Audiences were drawn to the strange mix of prettiness, eroticism, and war.
